From the volcanic slopes to your snack bag, our mission is to honor the incredible bounty of Hawaii. Every single fruit we source - the legendary, extra-sweet Maui Gold® pineapples and creamy apple bananas - is grown right here on Maui. We work hand-in-hand with local farms and our neighbors to keep our community thriving and our carbon footprint tiny. The only time we ever look beyond our shores is for our rich, buttery macadamia nuts, typically "imported" from our neighbors over on the Big Island, as well as our authentic ube and ube flavoring from the Philippines or Indonesia.
We love these fruits, so we use every single bit of them. By slicing and processing each harvest by hand, we practice a strict zero-waste philosophy that utilizes 100% of the usable fruit. What doesn't make it into our signature chewy slices is repurposed, ensuring nothing goes to waste and every ounce of intense tropical flavor is captured.
We utilize culls or misfits when we can - the fruit that's still just as good on the inside but doesn't look as pretty the outside - and is often sorted out of the mix that goes to grocers or retailers. Our pineapple tops are replanted to grow more fruit - though a few are given as gifts to share the joy and bring some relief to our crowded lanai. The leftover rinds are occasionally used to naturally tenderize meats, but they mostly head down the road to become a vibrant simple syrup for cocktails at a popular local restaurant. Even the tough pineapple cores find a purpose, dehydrated down into a bromelain-rich, concentrated super powder for smoothies and drinks.
Our apple banana scraps are given the same royal treatment. Extra fruit is whipped into treats for (or immediately fed to) our K9, Aka - the bestest live search and HRD dog on the Maui Search & Rescue team. The peels are dehydrated and blended with our leftover eggshells from breakfast to create a custom, nutrient rich all-natural fertilizer for our pineapples and other friendly foliage - since it's what plants crave.
When you open a bag, you are getting a clean, sustainable taste of true island paradise, crafted with love and respect.
Don't Toss It - Reuse It! 🌺
That little packet inside your bag is working hard to keep your snacks fresh, crunchy, and delicious. It's a food-safe, non-toxic silica gel desiccant, and while it's not edible, it's completely safe to use around food, pet treats, vitamins, electronics, and other items that need a little help staying dry.
Once you've finished your snacks, give the packet a second life! Tuck it into a spice jar, camera bag, tackle box, toolbox, storage bin, gym bag, pet treat container, or anywhere moisture likes to sneak in. Just remember to keep it out of reach of curious kids and pets - it may look like candy, but it definitely isn't.
The beads inside start out light orange and turn dark green when they've absorbed all the moisture they can. To recharge the packet, microwave it on 560W (Low/Defrost setting) for 3 minutes. If the beads are still green, let the packet cool for a few minutes and repeat until they return to orange. Avoid using full microwave power, as it can damage the packet. Pro tip: they may be hot if you take them out of the microwave immediately.
With a little care, you can reuse your silica packet several times before tossing it in the trash. It's one small way to reduce waste, and one more way to help keep our islands beautiful. Mahalo for doing your part! 🌴
From Maui, With (Almost) Everything 🌴
We do our best to keep things local. The fruit, the ingredients, and the care that go into every batch come from right here on Maui. The one thing that doesn't? Our pouch.
Keeping dehydrated snacks fresh takes the right packaging. While #1 and #2 plastics are commonly recycled, they don't provide the moisture and oxygen barrier needed to keep dehydrated foods crisp and shelf-stable. Kraft paper bags that look eco-friendly and claim to be compostable or biodegradable actually rely on hidden plastic linings or toxic glues that require specialized industrial facilities to break down. Without it, they fail to degrade safely and leave behind microscopic pieces of bioplastic - or worse, they end up in a landfill and release heavy amounts of methane gas (as most do, since only 46-108 industrial composting facilities across the US that actually accept and can break these down properly - and you typically have to send it to them or drop them off directly.)
That's why we chose the next best option: a single-material polypropylene (PP) pouch. It offers the protection our snacks need while avoiding the multi-layer, mixed-plastic packaging used for many snack foods, making it a more recyclable choice - though they aren't usually accepted in your curbside bin. There are, however, over 20,000 retail drop-off locations across the mainland that accept clean and dry flexible plastic films and mono-material bags like ours, including:
Organic & Specialty Grocers like Whole Foods and Sprouts
Mass Retailers like Target, Walmart and Kohl's
Major Grocery Chains like Kroger, Safeway, Albertsons, Publix, Meijer, Wegmans, Stop & Shop and Food Lion
If recycling #5 polypropylene isn't available in your area and you aren't able to drop it off at one of the many places that accept it, we hope you'll give your pouch a second life. The durable, resealable zipper makes it perfect for storing homemade trail mix, dried herbs, beach essentials, travel items, craft supplies, pet treats, or anything else that could use a little organization.
As packaging technology and recycling programs continue to evolve, we'll keep searching for even better solutions. Our goal is simple: source local whenever possible, reduce waste wherever we can, and deliver the freshest and best tasting Maui-grown snacks possible.
Mahalo for supporting local agriculture, thoughtful packaging, and a cleaner Maui - one snack at a time.
